My name is Domini Hooper (formerly Domini Barry) and I am an Arts Psychotherapist in Bath.
I have a BA(Hons) degree from Hull University and a Post Graduate Diploma from the University of Hertfordshire. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and I am a full member of the British Association of Dramatherapists (BADth)
I have worked for more than 20 years as an arts psychotherapist in schools, helping children with emotional and behavioural problems. I also work from my private practice, Open Space, specialising in working with postnatal mothers, children, and adolescents. I am part of the NHS Perinatal Emotional Wellbeing Partnership and run groups for mothers with Postnatal Depression. I run therapy training workshops, give talks and have had my work published in the Journal of Dramatherapy.
The aim of any Psychotherapy is to help improve our emotional well-being by understanding more about our feelings, relationships and why we may act or behave in the way we do. In Arts Psychotherapy, the process involves creative arts (drama, dance, art etc) as well as talking to achieve this. For example, in my work with children we might use small-world play with characters to work through experiences in the child's life. Or an adolescent may find it easier to represent their feelings through colours and drawings if they are struggling to find the right words.
Using the creative arts opens up a new way of thinking about an issue and can help you approach a sensitive issue in a more manageable way.
